President’s Message

During the winter and spring months, AAUW members from across the Commonwealth have two planned opportunities to meet one another, have topical discussions, listen to others’ viewpoints and perhaps make plans for change. The first of these meetings is Lobby Day at the General Assembly. On that day, our members meet with members of the League of Women Voters as well. The day is well-organized and informative. Check the website for the Women’s Legislative Roundtable session at http://virginia.va.lwvnet.org/calendar.html. If you decide to attend Lobby Day, contact (our own) Laura Wimmer at lwimmeraauw@aol.com.

The second meeting is several months away. Save the Date for the AAUW State Conference held April 20-22. Our Branch will be organizing a Basket Raffle for the last day of Convention. Baskets are prepared by Branches, or individual members, and are sold through a Silent Auction. Proceeds will benefit AAUW Funds. Our Branch will prepare one basket to contribute: think about a creative theme and let someone on the Board know. Better still, decide to chair this project for the group!

The GRAAUW Financial Report is included in this newsletter. Let me clarify some misinformation that I have communicated to members this year: by law or tax regulations, the Branch does not have to spend the monies accumulated in the Vanguard investment account. However, we can spend money to support an activity that gives support to the AAUW mission. For instance, at the November meeting, a group of us held an informative meeting studying and discussing the recent Sexual Harassment research study funded by AAUW. If our branch should decide to hold a program for the public about the research, the accumulated funds could be used for that purpose. So, I do continue to encourage members to think about what we could do for the good of women and girls beyond our membership. And, if you have an idea, suggest we take a Study leading to Action response.

I look forward to seeing you at our next meeting on Saturday the 21st at the Glen Allen Library.
